Let’s break it down:

Toothpaste is something we use every single day yet few of us stop to think about what’s actually in it. Because oral tissues absorb quickly, whatever you brush with can enter your bloodstream faster than most other products you use on your body. Many conventional toothpastes contain ingredients meant to whiten or foam, but they can also expose your mouth to unnecessary chemicals. Choosing a cleaner toothpaste matters for both long-term health and sustainable daily care, especially for children, who may accidentally swallow small amounts.

The gentle truth:

Traditional toothpastes often rely on sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) for foaming, artificial sweeteners for taste, and chemical preservatives to extend shelf life. These can irritate sensitive gums, trigger mouth ulcers, and disrupt your mouth’s natural microbiome, the balance of good bacteria that protect against cavities and bad breath. Some whitening toothpastes also use abrasive particles that can wear down enamel over time. And while fluoride can help prevent cavities, excessive amounts or swallowing it regularly can pose risks, especially for young children. (My family has eliminated all sources of fluoride in our home.)

Choose with care:

Choose formulas that use natural minerals and botanicals, like calcium carbonate, hydrated silica, baking soda, xylitol, and nano- or micro-hydroxyapatite to polish and remineralize teeth without stripping enamel.

Avoid common irritants and synthetic chemicals, especially if you or your family have sensitivities. Steer clear of:

  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS): Causes mouth ulcers and irritation.

  • Artificial dyes or sweeteners: Look for colorless, naturally flavored alternatives.

  • Triclosan and parabens: Linked to hormone disruption and antibiotic resistance.

  • PEGs, propylene glycol, or formaldehyde releasers: Unnecessary chemical stabilizers.

A safer toothpaste doesn't have to taste bad- look for xylitol, stevia, or organic essential oils (peppermint, spearmint, cinnamon) instead of synthetic flavors or saccharin.

Gentle preservatives like sodium benzoate or citric acid help maintain freshness without harsh chemicals. Bonus points for metal or recyclable tubes and plastic-free packaging to reduce environmental impact.

For children, pick fluoride-free or low-fluoride options with mild flavor and low abrasivity. Kids are more likely to swallow toothpaste, so clean ingredients are extra important.

Trust brands that clearly list every ingredient and provide third-party testing or safety certifications (like MADE SAFE, EWG Verified, or NATRUE).

Although with limited long-term data in the U.S., I love nano-hydroxyapatite because it works with your body not against it. This naturally occurring mineral helps rebuild enamel, reduce sensitivity, and restore your smile’s smooth finish without harsh chemicals or fluoride concerns. It’s gentle, biocompatible, and safe even for children, making it an excellent choice for families who want effective protection using ingredients that mirror the biology of their own teeth. Hydroxyapatite is a naturally occurring mineral- it makes up about 97% of your tooth enamel and 70% of dentin. The “nano” form means the particles are very small (measured in nanometers), which helps them fill microscopic cracks and rebuild enamel more effectively. Japan and many parts of Europe have used it widely with great success.
