Your bathroom may be small, but it’s one of the most important places to reduce toxins- here’s why:

Most bathrooms have limited airflow, so chemicals from cleaners, shower curtains, or personal care products can build up quickly. When combined with steam from hot showers, VOCs and synthetic fragrances get trapped in the air and absorbed more easily into your lungs and skin.

Bathrooms are where you put products directly on your body- shampoos, soaps, lotions, deodorants, and toothpaste. If these contain parabens, phthalates, sulfates, or synthetic fragrance, your skin and mucous membranes (which are very absorbent) are exposed daily.

Warm showers open your pores, and steam increases the rate at which your body absorbs chemicals. Even small amounts of toxins from personal care products or cleaners can add up over time.

Swapping to safer bathroom items reduces your daily toxic load. This helps support hormone balance, skin health, immune function, and better breathing for the whole family.

  • Skip sprays and plug-ins- instead use an essential oil diffuser, beeswax candle, or open a window

  • Run an exhaust vent fan to reduce humidity and squeegee the shower to prevent mold growth

  • Add baking soda and vinegar into your routine cleaning

  • Look for organic cotton or bamboo towels and washcloths, free of chemical dyes and softeners

  • Use a cotton, cork, or natural rubber bath mat instead of synthetics

  • Add a shower filter to minimize chlorine exposure

  • Be mindful of all personal care product purchases and read labels carefully

  • Consider a shower water filter or whole home filtration unit to reduce chlorine exposure on skin and in lungs
